Saddleback College is located north of Camp Pendleton, and is celebrating 50 years of serving the educational needs of south Orange County.
We recently received a Summer 2018 College for Kids guide at a San Clemente community event. We had no idea that Saddleback offered such a diverse and exciting array of classes for kids of all ages over the summer! If you are looking for some educational activities to keep your kids busy during school break, you need to check out Saddleback’s “Gaucho Guide” to see all they are offering this summer. You can find the guide and register HERE.
There are classes for kids 0 to 18. There are also lots of adult classes (YEAH!). While flipping through the Gaucho Guide to see all of the College for Kids offerings, we thought of all those MilParents who will be single-parenting this summer because of a deployed spouse. Why not sign your kids up for a few classes so that they can meet new friends, learn and enjoy their summer break, all while giving yourself a break from the rigors of solo-parenting? Or, if you’re PCSing to the area this summer, enroll your kids and let them get a jump-start on making new friends (while you get time to organize at your new place)!
There are a few different programs:
Junior Gauchos Swimming – two heated outdoor pools are used for the Parent and Me, Tiny Tot, and Beginners classes. Classes range in age and experience from “Parent and Me” (Ages 0-3) to Competitive Swim Techniques and Springboard Diving.
College for Kids (CFK) – gives children and teens (5-18) a chance to experience college life. The on-campus program offers an array of classes in the following areas: Academics, Enrichment, Active and STEM. There are classes to fit any schedule, and there is also Early Drop-In Care available for ages 4-17 starting at 8am. College for Kids (CFK) offers three 2-week (Monday – Thursday) sessions for summer 2018: June 18-28, July 9-19, and July 23 to August 2. Most classes meet for 1 hour and 45 minutes (long enough for you to run a few errands solo or meet a friend for lunch)!
CUSD Summer Experience – in partnership with Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), Saddleback Community Education offers the 2018 Summer Experience for children, designed to give children (ages 5-14) summer enrichment classes at CUSD school sites. The program offers nine weeks of classes in science, sports, academic enrichment, and more. There are nine one-week (Monday – Thursday) sessions, and most classes meet for three hours.
Here are just a few of the types of classes offered:
- Life Skills
Here are a few of the classes that caught our eye (but there are SO MANY MORE to choose from – seriously, go check out the Gaucho Guide!):
Incrediflix: LEGO Flix (Ages 7-13) – meets Mon-Thu, 1-2:50pm from July 9 to 19 (8 classes). Fee is $200 (course #12621). “We know you love LEGOs, and we know you can create incredible worlds. Now it’s time ot bring these worlds to life in LEGO-animated flix! We provide the LEGOs, and you provide the imagination. Students will create a LEGO set with LEGO characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot, and voice over in age-appropriate groups. Flix can be downloaded within a month after camp ends.”
BrainStorm: Code Academy: Scratch and Kodu Programming (Ages 6-9) – meets Mon-Thu, 11am – 12:45pm from July 9 to 19 (8 classes). Fee is $230 (course #12582). “Scratch and Kodu are graphical programming languages used to introduce fundamental programming concepts like variables, loops and conditional statements. Enter the world of computer science by learning how to create animations, computer games, and interactive projects. Teach a mischeivous cat to dance, explore a maze, or play mini games. Learn how to use math and computer coding to think creatively. No previous programming skills are required! Students should be comfortable using a computer and browser, as well as managing files.”
We also spotted a musical theater class, day trips for adults, and study skills classes for kids entering middle and high school. The choices are endless, and there’s sure to be a class to engage all types and ages of learners.
Go check out the guide and enroll yourself or your kids now!
