Happy New Year! Perhaps you made resolutions for 2019? Maybe they include eating more whole foods or shopping locally? Or to get out and explore where you live? (Maybe you are feeling inspired by our Making Adventure a New Years Goal post?!) Visiting a local farmer’s market is just the place to achieve all these things at once.
California grows a bounty of vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Our sunny climate grows beautiful food and allows for outdoor farmer’s markets all year round. That is why the Carlsbad Village Farmer’s Market runs Wednesday afternoons all year long. In the Fall/Winter it runs from 3-6pm and in the Spring/Summer it runs 3-7pm.
I have been lucky to know the Carlsbad Village Farmer’s Market going back to 2010. It has expanded a lot and changed since then. It used to be a small set up in a parking lot, and now it shuts down a main street to only pedestrian traffic and has attracted many new and exciting local vendors.
You can always count on their being amazing seasonal produce and flowers. There are usually many treats like baked goods, Indian food and naan bread, nut butters, and cookies. I always enjoy seeing fresh eggs, meat, and local honey as well. When strawberries are in season this is the place to go to get the best local selection!
Milmom tip: Bring a a few reusable bags and some cash for the occasional vendor that is cash only. I usually plan to pick up something fresh to have for dinner that night because everything is do delicious and fresh.
The market takes place on State Street, between Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue. If traveling up or down the 5 you can take the Carlsbad Village Drive exit and drive a couple of blocks towards the ocean and be at the market. I usually try to park a block away in the parking lot at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Roosevelt Street. There is street parking all around the village.
If you are local I highly recommend you see this farmer’s market. You can add it to your list for a local adventure this year. Get some food and take it to the beach for a picnic! It is a short walk to the beach from the market.
