Day 6 of Isolation School: Learning about Sea Creatures

In our pre-isolation life, we enjoyed visiting aquariums all over the world. When discussing what they wanted to learn about today, the youngest said fish and mermaids. While I think she just wanted to watch The Little Mermaid on repeat (well, we might get there this evening), I dove into the internet to find what I could find to learn about sea life.

Narwhal Facts: We started the day reviewing some Narwhal facts. You know, the mermaids of the sea. The link was sent to me courtesy of my mom.

Preparing to feed the fish with the Virginia Living Museum: A favorite from my childhood, the Virginia Living Museum (VLM), had a whole schedule for presentations throughout the day. The VLM Facebook account has a TON of videos from their previous presentations available to be watched and used for educational review. Given the request to learn about fish, we tuned in to learn about preparing a diet for fish.

Fish Food preparation center

PlayDough Fish Food prep: For creative play, I set a timer for 20 minutes and told the girls they had to prepare a play dough pretend feast for their pretend fish. I made the fish out of construction paper while they did it and they “fed” the fish when done.

Social Distancing Egg Hunt Preparation: The Charleston Mom blog shared free printable of eggs for an egg hunt – social distancing style. We printed the coloring pages of the eggs for coloring and will be putting them in our windows for kiddos in the neighborhood to go on a safe egg hunt.

Facebook Live with Virginia Living Museum: At 11:00 – 11:30 am EST and 2:30 – 3:00 pm EST, the Virginia Living Museum presents Facebook Lives with staff at the museum. There are varied topics twice a day, and if you are looking for something in particular, check out the video history.

Shark Cam!: We love the Monterey Bay Aquarium and have been several times in person. We were able to check out the virtual shark cam on their facebook page complete with soothing music. We enjoyed watching while rolling some play dough and using cookie cutters to make fish of all types.

Fitness Bingo!: The girls really enjoy the Fitness Bingo sheets, and are now asking to do them. In addition to randomly breaking out in jumping jacks and push ups. I think this is a sign that they are really craving some outside time, which hasn’t happened recently.

School packet: The school sent home reading and math sheets, and those were almost completed today. Worksheets are the jam and give a feeling of actual school, I think, so she enjoyed them.

This week has themes totally chosen by the oldest, and it’s been so enjoyable. I wonder what the next day will be!
