First – can I just say – YUM.
So last week I shared favorite work out apps, today I share a favorite place to get a local treat. Everything in moderation in balance!
If you are looking for delectable desserts that are beyond description in taste and beauty in the San Diego area– this is your place. I was first introduced to this restaurant when a dear friend and I went to explore San Diego area almost 10 years ago!
There are two branches of this San Diego restaurant – one in Little Italy, and one in Balboa Park – this is a review and information on the one in Little Italy.
Parking here is on the street or finding a public parking lot and walking up. There are a few metered parking spots just outside the restaurant. The nearest pay public parking lot is just around the corner. To be honest, I have always parked on the street and walked up, but I have never gone on an evening or for brunch. I frequently add this stop to a trip down to the Balboa area because it is so close, and then we can enjoy a San Diego treat that night at home.
Upon opening the huge industrial door, you are greeted by two cabinets full of beautifully decorated sweets. Don’t be taken back by the “plain” look of the chocolate shortbread – this is seriously amazing. If you want to eat in, just walk up to the hostess desk and tell them how many you have in your party. They are high chairs available if needed. If you are taking your delicacies to go, grab a clipboard, pencil and list from the hostess station. Now, peruse the cases to choose your goodies – the hard part is narrowing down what you will bring. There are gluten-free options as well.
The sweets do rotate seasonally – this past fall they had a pecan pie that was huge in portion and gooey in taste, simply delicious. This past spring, fruit was in with fruit tarts and passion fruit yums. If you want to scope out the latest seasonal treat, check out their Instagram page before you go. Trust me when I say, you will not be disappointed. Don’t be shocked by the prices – they look a little on the pricier side, but the portions are huge and we often split a treat between two to four of us. And you are supporting a local business who uses local ingredients.
There are savory options too. They even offer brunch on Sundays, but the highlight to us has always been the sweet at the end or for even the entire meal. Moderation, remember?
This MilMom’s favorite is the bread pudding – whichever seasonal spin they put on it. If you are ordering it to go, there will be an extra charge for the container it is in since it is yours to keep when you purchase it. The kids love the crostadas, especially when they eat them in the morning.
They do not currently offer a military discount, but when I went in last the cashier said I should always ask because “you never know.” I will share if they ever say yes when I ask.
