Today’s post is part of our PCS Prep series. Orders are in hand or coming for military families around the world. The unknown can be nerve wracking. Wendi, living at Ft. Bragg, has shared the adventure there. While the unknown can be scary, planning the fun part after the move and unpacking (or maybe during) can be done.
Fort Bragg, North Carolina and the surrounding areas are full of activities for the entire family throughout every season. No matter whether you are active in the outdoors or prefer indoor activities, there is something here for everyone.
Outdoor Activities
Downtown Fayetteville
Throughout the year, downtown Fayetteville hosts many special events to include the Dogwood Festival, The Zombie Walk, a Charles Dickens Christmas, and so many other specialty seasonal events. There are many restaurants, coffee shops, dessert specialty places, holistic health centers, museums, theaters, and tons of shopping to experience.
Farms
Agriculture is a big part of the counties surrounding Fort Bragg. During the summers you can go strawberry picking at Gross Farms, or blueberry picking at Carter Blueberry Farm. There are also Fall events with pumpkin patches and activities at Gallberry Corn Maze and seasonal homemade ice cream at Gillis Hills Farm. There is even an Ostrich farm in the area named Misty Morning Ranch, which is amazing to see in person!
MWR Events
Fort Bragg’s Morale, Welfare, and Wellness provides many fun, low cost, and sometimes free events for the entire family throughout the year. In the Spring they begin their free monthly 5K’s, which are stroller and dog-friendly. These run from spring through the fall with a night glow run to end the free 5K season. They also provide group fitness classes at gyms across post and aquatic fitness classes to include; aqua aerobics, aqua yoga, aqua cycle, and aqua zumba. You will need your DOD ID and a class pass or cash to attend the group fitness classes. Lastly, throughout the year, MWR provides monthly family fun events such as; ski trips, stand-up comedy, dancing, and more.
Nature
The Fayetteville area has several outdoor areas that are worth a visit. The Cape Fear Trail is perfect for a nature walk, biking, jogging, or for simply enjoying the scenery. The Cape Fear Botanical Gardens are also a noteworthy place to visit. The spring and summer are best for this place in order to see all of the beautiful flowers in bloom. Lastly, the Fayetteville Rose Garden is a much smaller walk with a beautiful backdrop for pictures.
Indoor Activities
Defy Fayetteville
For those rainy days, Defy Fayetteville is a perfect way for you and your kids to have fun jumping in a huge indoor trampoline park. They have obstacle courses and even a zip line for the dare devils in your family.
Ice Skating
On post, there is an ice skating that is open year round. You can take lessons, join a club, or host a party there.
Indoor Skydiving
This family friendly activity will surely please the adrenaline junkies in your family. This activity is super fun and exhilarating and skydivers are only allowed in one at a time, which can be a little scary. You are paired with a master indoor skydiver to show you the ropes during your session.
Whatever your preference is for family fun, Fort Bragg truly has something for everyone. Get out and explore and give the area a try. You will be surprised how much you will begin to love this beautiful place.
