Last weekend, the Adventurer (our resident 8 year old) and I had the opportunity to attend a preview screening of Dog Man—and it was absolutely hilarious.
For context, both of my older daughters have read the Dog Man books as part of their reading journey, which means I’ve read them too. The series, created as an in-universe comic by two fictional boys, follows the adventures of Dog Man—a half-dog, half-man super cop. The book titles playfully nod to literary classics, such as Lord of the Fleas, which always gave me a good laugh as a literature fan. The stories are colorful, funny, and layered with surprisingly poignant morals. So when we heard Universal Pictures was bringing Dog Man to the big screen, I’ll admit—I was excited.
Finding a truly family-friendly movie that appeals to all ages can be a challenge, but Dog Man delivers. Even if you haven’t read the books, the storyline is engaging and easy to follow. For those familiar with the series, there are some differences from the books, so if you have children who struggle with changes to beloved stories, you may want to give them a heads-up beforehand. That said, as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It made me laugh, tugged at my heartstrings, and had me smiling from start to finish.
With movie ticket prices being what they are, I’m selective about what’s worth the cost for a full-family outing—and Dog Man absolutely makes the cut.
All the beloved characters are here—Little Petey (my personal favorite), Petey, Petey’s Dad, Chief, the Mayor, Sarah Hatoff, and even Flippy. And yes, for fellow Dog Man aficionados, there’s no catch-22…you know exactly what I mean.
But don’t just take my word for it—here’s the Adventurer’s own movie review!
Dog Man Movie Preview Review by the Adventurer
The Dog Man movie was funny, and had humor very similar to the Dog Man books. It is mostly based off of the first one: Dog Man, but shows so much from all of the books from the original series (Dog Man to Dog Man: Mothering Heights) that it can’t include everything. It has it all from loving moments to hilarious jokes.
My favorite part is when Dog Man has to look at the monitors but gets too distracted (watch the trailer). Overall I think that the movie was great.
