Our third box arrived with squealing glees of excitement last week. Getting mail as a kid is like winning the lottery. This box was a lottery win for children and parents alike.
Each box that we have received has had a lesson, and this box was no different. From the theme of the box, “Stand Tall” you can guess it – standing tall and embracing your own uniqueness. This is a great theme for any child, especially a military child. There is a lot of adversity that children stand up against – frequent moves, frequent separations, worrying about their active duty parent(s) in harm’s way – in addition to the usual childhood challenges of growing, developing, and so many more. At any point in childhood development, and dare I say even in adulthood, it is a worthy reminder to stand tall in yourself and your personal beliefs.

This box included a book called “Giraffes Can’t Dance.” This beautifully illustrated book shares the journey of Gerald finding his own way to dance. Reminiscent of Happy Feet, one of our favorite movies, putting into the language everyone can understand that everyone is important. Along with reading the story, there were age appropriate questions listed in the guide as well for reading comprehension.
The next activity was an art project (arts and crafts is a love language in this house!). I loved that it had video instructions so each child could watch and interpret the project in their own way. Watching a video gives them a sense of independence while allowing them to be creative.
The themed snack was animal crackers, and the guide included two jungle themed snacks – banana giraffes and tropical toast. The toast is something we have in our home almost daily – banana and peanut butter toast, but this time with coconut. I enjoyed the toast, and enjoy that it opens up their palates a little. The banana giraffes were seriously adorable, and I would not have thought of this. Thanks to Marina Makes for sharing these recipes.
Within the guide, a goal chart was included asking them to write down with or without assistance the things they are good at and not good at yet. Framing the second category like this helps shape the answers on how to get better at those things. I personally loved this reminder. We are all about goals in this house, but it is a great reminder to put down a goal to improve on something we may not do fabulously.
A second arts and craft activity was an animal mask that you can scratch to reveal colors. We have done ornaments like this and loved that this was included. Taking turns and putting on this mask, we could dance to the roll-a-dance. I cut out the die template and after it dried we all took turns wearing the mask and dancing to the music. For every box, a curated Spotify music list is made so we jammed out to some of our favorite tunes from Sing!
While the children really look forward to the arrival of the boxes, and enjoy the planned activities, food and books, I have to say that I really look forward to them too. It’s a time of learning and discovery together. Excuse me, it’s time for more animal roll-a-dance!
