One of the first things that will come to mind for many when they hear “New Orleans” is Cafe Du Monde. Cafe Du Monde is an iconic New Orleans cafe that sits just next to the levee on the Mississippi River. The original coffee stand was established in 1862. Cafe Du Monde is open 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week (closed only on Christmas and, occasionally, if a hurricane gets too intense!)
Their specialty coffee is Au Lait – half chicory coffee and half hot milk. It is a delicious companion to the sugary sweet beignets.
Be prepared to wait if you go on the weekend! There is usually a line to get a table. A majority of the tables are under an awning, but still exposed to the elements on the side. That’s usually not a problem because the weather doesn’t get too cold here most of the year!
Skip the line and order your treats to go. In the back corner of the awning is a line for to go orders. Note that it is cash only in this line. A small Au Lait and a bag of 3 hot beignets will run you $6, inclusive of tax. Take them up on the levee to watch the boats while you eat.
These are so incredibly delicious when eaten warm, so dig right in!

After your treat, let the kids run off some sugar along the levee. It’s a paved walkway along the river, and you’ll find lots of boats to view. Check out our favorite steamboat the Natchez, all decked out for Christmas!
