Happy Weekend, Y’all!
We are excited to announce that MilMomAdventures is expanding to include New Orleans, Louisiana, thanks to the recent PCS of one of our moms!
Keep an eye out next week for a NOLA bucket list with all of the fun activities we’ve got planned, once the HHG shipment gets here and we settle in.
But first things first, a quick-start guide for our fellow milmoms and mildads if they find themselves PCSing to or visiting this great city of New Orleans!
Military bases – the closest base to New Orleans is NAS JRB Belle Chasse (that stands for Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base). It is located about 25 minutes southeast of the city. There is a Navy Gateway Inn and Suites, a NEX and a Commissary. All the basics if you need a place to stay for a while!
Housing – there is base housing available at NAS JRB Belle Chasse, as well as at Federal City. FC is north of BC and closer to the city, however it is not located on an active base (the base on which it sits was actually shut down, so there are no base amenities there and no gate guards). Before you PCS here, we highly recommend you take house-hunting leave and come see the area for yourself. It is a city, and like any city, there are many different neighborhoods. They each come with their own pros and cons, so it is important to see for yourself what each neighborhood has to offer, and whether it might be a good fit for your family. Lake Ponchartrain to the north separates the city from the “northshore”. Some military families choose to live on the northshore and have a longer commute. This is a matter of personal preference and it would be a good idea to come make the commute and decide if you would be comfortable with it. It can be 45 minutes to an hour or more, depending on traffic and bridge conditions. However, living on the northshore will feel more like the country or suburbs, which many prefer to city life!
Weather – It is hot and humid, to put it mildly!! If you PCS during the summer, like many of us do, you will arrive when it is pretty unbearable out. Give yourself and your kids time to adjust to the new climate. Get plenty of water and avoid the hottest parts of the day. Cool down your car before you put the kids inside.
